A conjugação do verbo "to be", no presente do indicativo, é:
I am (I'm) = eu sou/estou
He is (he's) = ele é/está
She is (she's) = ela é/está
It is (it's) = ele/ela é/está (animais, objetos, seres inanimados etc.)
We are (we're) = nós estamos/somos
You are (you're) = você/vocês é/são está/estão
They are (they're) = eles/elas são/estão

Exemplos:

I'm hungry (=estou com fome)
I'm a doctor (=sou médico)
She's beautiful (=ela é bonita)
You are ugly [=você/vocês é/são feio(a)/feios(as)] etc.

2. Perguntas com "to be": inverte-se a posição assumida pelo verbo em períodos afirmativos.

Exemplos:

Are you hungry? (=você está com fome?)
Are they teachers? (=eles/elas são professores(as)?)
Am I ugly (=sou/estou feio(a)?)

3. Sentenças negativas com "to be": adiciona-se not após o verbo.

Exemplos:

I'm not hungry (=não estou com fome)
She is not beautiful (=ela não é/não está bonita)
We are not teachers (=nós não somos professores(as))

Formas contraídas:

am not = ain't
is not = isn't
are not = aren't

4. Perguntas negativas com "to be": usa-se a forma contraída negativa na posição do verbo em sentenças interrogativas comuns.

Exemplos:

Aren't you hungry? (=você não está com fome?)
Isn't it funny? (=isso não é engraçado?)

5. A forma verbal correta de "to be" a ser usada em sentenças onde não exista he, she, you, they etc. depende do sujeito, que pode ser plural (usa-se are) ou singular (usa-se is). Não usa-se am quando o sujeito não for I.

Exemplos:

My brother is funny. Nesse caso, como o sujeito é singular (my brother = meu irmão), a forma a ser usada é is.
My parents are young. Nesse caso, sendo o sujeito plural (my parents = meus pais), a forma a ser usada é are.

6. O verbo "to be" pode ser usado com outros verbos, sem "to" após ele. Normalmente o outro verbo estará no gerúndio (-ing). Este tipo de construção chama-se "Present Progressive".

Exemplos:

She's working (=ela está trabalhando)
We are playing (=nós estamos brincando)
Is he speaking? (=ele está falando?)
It isn't working (=isso não está funcionando)
Aren't they teaching? (=eles/elas não estão ensinando?)
SPEAK UP!http://www.blogger.com/profile/03444557059137865674noreply@blogger.com0
